Landmark #754 | San Francisco County | Visited: February 23, 2013 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque outside the InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco Hotel! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: In February 1893, Mr. Edward F. Searles donated the Hopkins Mansion to the University of California in trust for the San Francisco Art Institute for “instruction in and illustration of the fine arts, music, and literature,” and as San Francisco’s first cultural center.
OTHER TIDBITS: This was one of the nation’s oldest schools of higher education in contemporary art! It was not founded or even known about by Mark Hopkins, though. One of the Big Four of the Central Pacific Railroad, Mr. Hopkins had died just before his Victorian mansion, which would eventually be donated as the institute, was completed! After the great fire of 1906 destroyed the mansion, the San Francisco Art Institute moved to Chestnut Street, a mile north! |
