Site of St. Mary’s Church!

Site of St. Mary's Church
Landmark #810 San Francisco County Visited: February 23, 2013 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A refurbished Old St. Mary’s Cathedral is still in service!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: The first building erected as a cathedral in California, Old St. Mary’s served the Archdiocese of San Francisco from 1854 to 1891. Once the city’s most prominent building, it is built of brick brought “around the Horn” in sailing ships, and much of its stonework was quarried and cut in China.

OTHER TIDBITS: This cathedral is ministered by the Missionary Society of St. Paul the Apostle, also known as the Paulist Fathers, which was founded in 1858 by Isaac Hecker. They were the Catholic church’s version of revivalist missionaries! Their missionary focus at this site was to convert the Chinese residents of San Francisco’s nearby Chinatown! The church fell in the earthquake of 1906 and was rebuilt in 1909!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West!
  • Donate to the Paulist Fathers!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
