Landmark #412 | San Diego County | Visited: March 30, 2013 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The town of Julian! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Following the discovery of gold nearby during the winter of 1869-70, this valley became the commercial and social center of a thriving mining district. Ex-Confederate soldier, Drury D. Batley, laid out the town on his farmland and named it for his cousin and fellow native of Georgia, Michael S. Julian. By 1906 most mines were unprofitable. Since then the area has become more famous for the variety and quality of its apple crop.
OTHER TIDBITS: This isn’t a historical note, but the apple pie found in this town is the stuff of legend! Really! You can get it all over town, but I had my first slice of Julian apple pie at Mom’s Café! Each fall, you can also visit Julian and pick your own apples from some of the local orchards, making this a fruit adventure worth making! |
