Chapel of San Ramón!

Chapel of San Ramón
Landmark #877 Santa Barbara County Visited: June 8, 2013 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? The Chapel of San Ramón still stands!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: This redwood frame chapel, erected in 1875 by Frederick and Ramona Foxen Wickenden, illustrates the transition between the architecture of the old missions and the frame churches of the American settlers. It is a unique example of the use of wood to create strong, simple forms that had formerly been executed in adobe.

OTHER TIDBITS: Frederick Wickenden sold 5,000 sheep in Redwood City to buy the land and supplies to build this chapel, which sure fits the pastoral theme! He teamed up with his brother-in-law, Thomas, and a third architect, Chris Clausen, to build it! The chapel took its name from Saint Raymond Nonnatus, patron saint of agriculture and farming!
