Landmark #720 | San Luis Obispo County | Visited: June 8, 2013 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The Dallidet Adobe still stands! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This was the home of Pierre Hyppolite Dallidet, a native of France, who settled in San Luis Obispo in 1853 and became a vineyardist. His son, Paul Dallidet, gave it to the San Luis Obispo County Historical Society in 1953, in memory of the Dallidet family that had occupied it for a century.
OTHER TIDBITS: Having failed to make his fortune in the northern gold fields, Mr. Dallidet started south for Mexico but only made it as far as San Luis Obispo. There, he befriended the Salazar family, married Ascenscion Salazar, and built an adobe next to theirs. From this home base, Mr. Dallidet went on to found the Central Coast’s first winery! On this property, the family grew 11 types of grapes, along with peaches, artichokes, passion fruit, and a whole host of crops, common and exotic! |
