Landmark #340 | Santa Barbara County | Visited: June 8, 2013 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The refurbished 11th mission (of 21) founded by Father Fermín Francisco de Lasuén! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Established December 8, 1787, by Father Lasuén, the mission was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1812. Removed from control of Franciscans during secularization of the missions, it was abandoned in 1834. State and National Park Services and the Civilian Conservation Corps restored major and many small structures and the water system so that today La Purisima is the only example in California of a complete mission.
OTHER TIDBITS: This pink mission is the only one of California’s 21 whose buildings are arranged in a line, not in a quadrangle! It was built on the Chumash village of Algsacup and housed up to 1,520 people! Apart from the disastrous earthquake, the Mission also quaked under a four-month occupation of rebels during a widespread revolt in 1824! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
