What is it? | The old asistencia ruins are on site, but the only publicly visible part is the sign for the ranch! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This asistencia served as an outpost or chapel and storehouse for Mission San Luis Obispo. Here the mission padres and the Indians carried on extensive grain cultivation.
OTHER TIDBITS: Santa Margarita de Cortona Asistencia started as a place of worship and agricultural growth for the Spanish padres. After the Mexican government took over the missions, this area came under the ownership of Joaquin Estrada In 1841. He was well known for throwing lavish parties! Such notables as Pío Pico and John C. Frémont came through here to form war strategies, and after the American takeover, this area has continued to be a ranch! |
