What is it? | Two plaques in different locations! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This mill was erected by John Reed about 1833-34 on Rancho Corte Madera del Presidio—”the wood cutting place for the Presidio”—present-day Mill Valley. Reed built the first house in Sausalito and the first ferryboat to ply San Francisco Bay.
OTHER TIDBITS: Mr. Reed was originally from Ireland! He came to Mill Valley in 1826 and made friends with William Richardson. Together, they asked Governor José Figueroa for land grants; Mr. Reed got the 8,000-acre Rancho Corde Madera del Presidio, and Mr. Richardson got the 19,000-acre Rancho Sausalito! Mr. Reed lived fast and hard, building a mill, founding a town, and building a family with Hilaria Sánchez, daughter of the Presidio Comandante, José Antonio Sánchez. He lived so fast and hard that he was dead of a botched phlebotomy by 1843 at the young age of 38! |
