Lime Kilns!

Lime Kilns
Landmark #222 Marin County Visited: Sept. 1, 2013 Plaque?  NO. 🙁
What is it? The ruins of an old Russian lime kiln!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Tradition is that the lime kilns were built by Russian stonemasons and worked by Indians during the Russian occupation of Sonoma County, which began in the spring of 1812. The Russians probably used the lime to whitewash their windmills, farm buildings, granaries, storehouses, and cattle yards, to tan hides, and to manufacture brick and tile.

OTHER TIDBITS: That pretty well sums it up!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Become a member of the Marin County Historical Society!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!

ANNOTATIONS:
You’re going to have to feel this one out! There are two spots to pull out near the guide’s location, and from there you just have to find the obscure, overgrown trail leading down toward the creek. Luckily, if you look hard enough, you should be able to spot the ruins from the road. It’s not easy; it took me two tries!
