What is it? | This site is now the University of California, San Francisco’s Laurel Hill Campus! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: The builders of the West, civic and military leaders, jurists, inventors, artists, and eleven United States Senators are buried here, on the most revered of San Francisco’s hills.
OTHER TIDBITS: In 1900, the city passed an ordinance banning the burial of the dead within city limits. That meant the entire cemetery had to be relocated! Many of the people were moved to mass graves, while families with enough means were able to purchase private plots for their own dead. The whole process took 48 years! |
