Landmark #221 | Marin County | Visited: Sept. 1, 2013 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | A few remnants of the dock remain! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This wharf was built in the early 1850s to load lumber on lighters to be floated out to the deeper water near the channel, where it was transferred to seagoing vessels for shipment to San Francisco.
OTHER TIDBITS: “Lighter” doesn’t actually describe the wharf itself; a lighter is a type of barge used to navigate shallow waters and bring cargo out to larger ships! Bolinas itself used to be the main port of entry for Marin County and was certainly one of the busiest! Roughly 13 million feet of lumber were shipped from this wharf to San Francisco for building purposes, until the supply ran out and the wharf disintegrated into the lagoon! |
