Portolá Expedition Camp (Pilarcitos Creek)!

Portolá Expedition Camp
Landmark #21 San Mateo County Visited: October 19, 2013 Plaque?  NO. 🙁
What is it? One of the camp sites along Don Gaspar de Portolá’s expedition route from Mexico to Monterey!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: The Portolá Expedition of 1769 camped close to the mouth of Pilarcitos Creek on October 28 and 29. Portolá himself was very ill.

OTHER TIDBITS: Specifically, Portolá and many of the men on his expedition, suffered from scurvy at different stages of their journey! In case you didn’t know, scurvy is caused by a lack of Vitamin C, which is ironic considering modern California is one of the world’s citrus capitals!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Volunteer with the San Mateo County History Museum!
  • Donate to the San Mateo County History Museum!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
Where is this place? LISTED DIRECTIONS:
Mouth of Pilarcitos Creek
1/2 mi W of State Hwy 1 (P.M.. 29.0)
Half Moon Bay, CA

ANNOTATIONS:
This is tricky to explain, and you’ll probably need a map for this. I accessed the Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail from the corner of Pilarcitos and St. John Avenue! From there, I took the Trail south until it met the beach, then hooked back north again along the beach for half a mile until I reached the mouth of Pilarcitos Creek pouring into the ocean!

From Los Angeles: ~377mi (607km) — 6.3hrs
From Sacramento: ~113mi (182km) — 1.9hrs
From San Diego: ~498mi (802km) — 8.3hrs
From San Francisco: ~28mi (46km) — 0.5hrs

When should I go? I don’t think there are specific regulations on when you can visit this site, but you’ll have a much easier time navigating during the day!
