Landmark #907 | San Mateo County | Visited: November 16, 2013 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | An exquisite country estate designed by architect, Willis Polk! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Filoli, built as the home of mining entrepreneur William B. Bourn II, was the last great residential commission of one of California’s most important architects, Willis Polk. Built in Georgian Revival style with its formal gardens, Filoli is an outstanding example of the grand estates of the late 1800s.
OTHER TIDBITS: The Bourns made their fortune at the Empire Mine in Grass Valley, another California Historical Landmark! The name “Filoli” isn’t Italian in any way; it’s actually the first two letters of each key word in Mr. Bourn’s personal credo: “Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life.” This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
