Landmark #870 | Monterey County | Visited: January 10, 2014 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The adobe home of José Eusebio Boronda! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Built between 1844 and 1848 by José Eusebio Boronda, this is an outstanding example of a Mexican-era rancho adobe. Virtually unaltered since its construction, it shows many features of the “Monterey Colonial” style.
OTHER TIDBITS: Mr. Boronda received this land as a gift from the Mexican government but had a hard time keeping it after the American government took over! He left home for 19 months, deeding his lands to his wife. However, she died while he was away, and his kids took control of the land, not in a nice, stewardship way, but in such a way that Mr. Boronda, on his return, sued them for his lands and ultimately won! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
