Landmark #425 | San Diego County | Visited: January 26, 2014 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque marking the site of California’s smallest Mexican land grant! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Commemorating Cañada de Los Coches Rancho, smallest Mexican grant in California, granted in 1843 to Apolinaria Lorenzana by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. This is the site of the old grist mill.
OTHER TIDBITS: Following the secularization of the missions, this rancho was set up to protect the padres’ hog farm, which is why it is called, in English, “Glen of the Pigs!” I assume this is an archaic Spanish translation, because in Spanish as I know it, “coche” means “car,” and “cerdo” means “pig!” |
