Landmark #1050 | Orange County | Visited: May 25, 2014 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | The historic beach cottages of Crystal Cove, in a wide range of conditions! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This landmark is too new for the guide!
OTHER TIDBITS: This sheltered cove was one of America’s first beach camping destinations in the 1920s! By the 1930s, the tents and trailers had been replaced by cottages, many of which were meant to be movie sets! 46 of these cottages are still standing today, and 13 of them have been restored enough that people can still rent them! There has been an ongoing battle over this area, because some developers want to tear down these cottages and put in a luxury hotel! The world would lose a lot of its charm. This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |

Where is this place? | LISTED DIRECTIONS: This site is too new for the guide! ANNOTATIONS: From Los Angeles: ~48mi (78km) — 0.8hrs |
When should I go? | If you want to stay in a cottage, then by all means, visit whenever you like, but I recommend swinging by between sunrise and sunset! There are also public tours on the second Saturday of each month from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM! |
A new plaque was installed in 2016 — The early to mid-twentieth century cottages in this last self-contained Southern California beachfront recreational community reflect a unique vernacular architectural design emblematic of “architecture without architects.”
