Landmark #279 | Alameda County | Visited: May 31, 2014 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque outside St. Leander’s Catholic Church! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Site of the last home, built about 1850, of José JoaquÃn Estudillo, grantee of Rancho San Leandro, and his wife, Juana MartÃnez de Estudillo. The family founded San Leandro, built a hotel, and donated several lots, including the original site of St. Leander’s Church, to the city.
OTHER TIDBITS: Have you ever wondered about how streets and neighborhoods get their names? Mulford Gardens is a subdivision in San Leandro named for Thomas Mulford, a squatter on the Estudillo rancho! After plenty of disputes, the Estudillos sold him 1/36th of their land, which became the neighborhood known today! As for Rancho San Leandro? It’s named after St. Leander of Seville, a major proselytizer among the Visigoths and brother to St. Isidore, whose basilica I visited in León! |
