Landmark #450 | Lake County | Visited: July 12, 2014 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque marking the site of Lake County’s oldest building! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Oldest building in Lake County, the Stone House was erected of stone in 1853-54 by Robert Sterling, whose wife was first non-Indian woman in Coyote Valley. It was rebuilt in 1894 and served as headquarters of the Guenoc land grant and the first store in the valley.
OTHER TIDBITS: Here’s a sign of the times for you! Robert Sterling arrived in Napa at the age of 24, newly retired after a 10-year career as a sailor! It was actually pretty common at the time to finish school and start work at the age of 14! When he reached California, he became manager of thousands of heads of cattle! When you think about it, people were a lot like beavers back in those days: ready to work from the start! |
