What is it? | Charles Krug Winery is the oldest operating winery in Napa Valley! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Founded in 1861 by Charles Krug (1825-1892), this is the oldest operating winery in Napa Valley. The pioneer winemaker of this world-famous region, Krug made the first commercial wine in Napa County at Napa in 1858.
OTHER TIDBITS: Charles Krug was actually a pretty cool guy! A super intellectual, he was a teacher in Philadelphia before the “March Revolution” of 1848 brought him back to Prussia to demand German unity! That didn’t work so well for him, and he ended up in jail, then exiled. Luckily, on coming back to the US, he became the editor of Staats Zeitung, the first German language newspaper on the West Coast, and the first to use a cider press for making wine! |
