Landmark #687 | Napa County | Visited: July 13, 2014 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The second oldest remaining railroad station in California! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: The Napa Valley Railroad depot, now the Southern Pacific depot, was built in 1868. Its roundhouse across Lincoln Avenue is gone. On its first trip, this railroad brought people to Calistoga for the elaborate opening of Brannan’s summer resort in October 1868.
OTHER TIDBITS: Sam Brannan lobbied hard for this railroad to bring visitors to his resort town of Calistoga, and the county helped raise $250,000 to make it happen! The original train ran from Vallejo to Calistoga and was even electrified in 1904! Unfortunately, Napa Valley’s small population and the rising popularity of the automobile brought about the demise of this little railroad! This landmark is also on the National Register of Historic Places! |
