Landmark #685 | Napa County | Visited: July 13, 2014 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | The last of Sam Brannan’s resort cottages in Calistoga! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Sam Brannan arrived in Napa Valley in the late 1850s with the dream of making it the “Saratoga of California.” In 1866 cottages were built and palm trees planted in preparation for the grand opening of the resort. This is the only cottage still standing.
OTHER TIDBITS: The hot springs of Napa Valley reminded Sam Brannan of his beloved Saratoga Springs in New York, so he put $500,000 into building a resort destination, equipped with cottages, bathing pavilions, and a horse racing track! Unfortunately, his lavish spending, alcoholism, lechery, and consequent divorce led to the lease and ultimate sale of his hard-built resort! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
