Landmark #426 | Lake County | Visited: July 13, 2014 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque marking the home of Charles Stone and Andy Kelsey, founders of Kelseyville! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This home was built by Charles Stone and Andy Kelsey on land purchased from Salvador Vallejo. They forced Indians to do the construction work, causing much resentment. Finally, in the fall of 1849, the Indians killed both Stone and Kelsey – their remains are buried beneath this monument.
OTHER TIDBITS: Like the Mexican rancheros before them, Kelsey and Stone came to see the native Pomo as the equivalent of cattle and decided to do with them as they wished. The plaque leaves out the full scale of atrocities committed by Stone and Kelsey, how they would force Pomo girls into their home to be raped, how they would shoot random Pomos to entertain guests, and how they brutally murdered anyone who complained, disobeyed, or made a mistake. These men got what they deserved. |
