Landmark #820 | Sonoma County | Visited: August 1, 2014 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | The oldest continuously serving church in Sonoma County! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Constructed of redwood in 1859 by New England ship’s carpenters on land donated by Jasper O’Farrell, the church has served this coastal community continuously for over a century. Father Louis Rossi was appointed pastor on March 8, 1860, and Archbishop Alemany dedicated the church on June 2, 1861.
OTHER TIDBITS: If you’ve ever watched Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, you’ll notice a distinctive church in the background of many of the shots. It’s this one! Hitchcock loved the misty, spooky look of this tiny town, which hasn’t changed a whole lot since he filmed it, and decided it would be the perfect place to stage the original Angry Birds! The phone booth is still positioned outside the local market! |
