What is it? |
Boontling is a language compiled from English, Gaelic, Spanish, Pomo, and onomatopoeia, and it’s limited to only one town in the USA! |
What makes it wonderful? |
According to legend, Boontling originated when some shepherds near Boonville wanted to talk behind the back of a woman in town who was pregnant outside of wedlock! Basically, the shepherds needed something to do in their isolated community, and Boontling also came to be a great way to talk about outsiders behind their backs!
Lots of things make Boontling wonderful: the sound of it, the uniqueness of it, and the way its words and expressions came about! For example, a “Buckey Walter” is a payphone, named for a “Buckey” (nickel) and a local fellow named Walter, who was on the phone all the time! So, if you’re ever out for a “slow lope’n a beeson tree” and feel thirsty, get to “hornin’!” If you have “heelch horn” and feel sick, you might have to call a “shoveltooth” on the “Bucky Walter” and “pike” over to his office! He might just recommend rest and “Zeese!” |
