Landmark #714 | Mendocino County | Visited: August 2, 2014 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | One of California’s oldest Protestant churches! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This is one of the oldest Protestant churches in continuous use in California. The Presbyterian Church, organized on November 6, 1859, dedicated the redwood building on July 5, 1868.
OTHER TIDBITS: Services actually started in a cookhouse in town, catering to members of many different denominations, but as the town grew, so did the need for more worship space! In fact, the congregation grew so quickly that the first attempt to build a new church had to be canceled so that an even larger one could be built in its place! Over the years, the town has continued to change, but the church has stayed largely the same, as best exemplified by Main Street now running behind the church instead of in front of its door! This landmark is also on the National Register of Historic Places! |
