Landmark #674 | Mendocino County | Visited: August 2, 2014 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | Round Valley is one of the prettiest violations of human independence! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This valley was discovered by Frank M. Azbill, who arrived from Eden Valley on May 15, 1854. During the same year, Charles Kelsey from Clear Lake also visited it and George E. White sighted it from Blue Nose.
OTHER TIDBITS: The guide’s description is a disgrace! Round Valley was basically a giant corral where the US government herded numerous Native American tribes to open up their land for settlement! The original inhabitants here were the Yuki, who may have been California’s most ancient people, but starting in 1856, the new settlers of California began rounding up other local tribes, even those who were traditionally hostile to the Yuki, and driving them into Round Valley! Then, in 1864, they reduced the reservation land by 80 percent! As a testament to these tribes’ resilience, the six main tribes (Yuki, Pit River, Pomo, Nomlacki, Concow, and Wailacki) have since banded together and formed the Round Valley Indian Tribes, which is federally recognized as its own unique, conglomerate tribe! Their mission is to protect their land, heritage, and the future of the next generation! |
