The First School House in Wyoming!

The First School House in Wyoming
Landmark #1 Uinta County Visited: Sept. 6, 2014 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? The reconstructed first school house in Wyoming!
What makes it historical? THE PLAQUE SAYS: In 1860, Judge William A. Carter erected this school house for the education of his four daughters, two sons, and other children of the fort. Competent instructors from the East were employed and the students of this school were permitted to enter eastern colleges without further preparation. Thus the way was paved for future education in Wyoming.

OTHER TIDBITS: William Carter was a sutler, a traveling shopkeeper for the US Army. When the Army brought him to Fort Bridger during the Utah War, he set up shop permanently and became Wyoming’s first millionaire! He did his best to maintain the life of a gentleman out on the range and was known for his hospitality!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Pay the entrance fee to help maintain trails, signs, structures, and other visitor services!
  • Volunteer with Daughters of Utah Pioneers!
  • You can buy something from the DUP online store!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
