What is it? |
James Cash Penney lived in this house and launched his retail chain just down the street! |
What makes it historical? |
When Mr. Penney and his family first came to Kemmerer, they lived in the attic over the store, but as the business began to prosper, they moved into this little house down the street! Mr. Penney originally intended for his stores to be Golden Rule stores, because they reflected his religious beliefs, and he wanted to focus more on building a chain of good men than a chain of stores. He focused on providing good quality products at prices that the local miners could afford, and this became the model of the super business that sprung from his efforts. Here in this home, he raised two sons but lost his wife. |

HERE’S HOW:
- Become a member of the Lincoln County Historical Society!
- Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
