Not Numbered. | Montgomery County | Visited: Sept. 21, 2014 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque on a post by the side of the road! |
What makes it historical? | THE PLAQUE SAYS: One of the most picturesque spots in Maryland. George Washington came here many times and built canal locks on the Virginia side to make the river navigable for his “Potomac Company.”
OTHER TIDBITS: George Washington’s goal for the Potowmack Company was to create a water-based trade route that bypassed these falls and allowed ship trade as far inland as the Ohio River Valley! He rationed that, in the wake of the Revolutionary War, binding the western frontier to the eastern seaboard would provide the necessary strength in case the newly formed United States of America should ever come under attack again! The canal never reached Ohio, but the railroad sure did! |
