Landmark #864 | Yolo County | Visited: Sept. 25, 2014 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A huge mansion in Woodside that was once owned by ranchers (I know, I thought it was Clark Gable too)! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: The Gable Mansion, an outstanding example of 19th-century Victorian Italianate architecture, is one of the last of its style, size, and proportion in California. This structure was built in 1885 for Amos and Harvey Gable, pioneer Yolo County ranchers.
OTHER TIDBITS: When the Gable patriarch died, the fourteen Gable children were turned out to work many different farms! Amos arranged to drive a private cattle herd in exchange for his own passage to the west, which is how he wound up in Yolo County! When his brother, Harvey, arrived with $700 in capital, they bought the cattle herd and went into debt, but their creditors were so taken with their enthusiasm that they waited to collect and the Amos brothers became very successful ranchers! After they paid off their debts, they came to own 8500 acres of land! |
