What is it? | A plaque marking the site of Granville P. Swift’s Adobe! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Granville P. Swift crossed the plains to Oregon in 1843 and entered California with the Kelsey party in 1844. In 1849, in partnership with Frank Sears, he purchased the cattle and brand of the Larkin grant from J. S. Williams. Swift soon had droves of cattle herded by Indian vaqueros, and rodeos were held annually at this adobe site.
OTHER TIDBITS: Mr. Swift made a fortune in gold mining after he left the army and used it to invest in cattle (see the Stone Corral) and his home, the first house in Glenn County! A skilled shooter, Mr. Swift loved his guns, and when he received a Ford rifle, he wanted to try it out! So, he had a party with a lot of target practicing, which upset the neighbor, partly because it was about the same time President Lincoln was assassinated! So the neighbor reported them to the authorities for celebrating the death of Mr. Lincoln! Luckily, Mr. Swift was able to explain everything to the armed men who showed up at the door of his adobe, and no further harm was done! |
