Landmark #851 | Yolo County | Visited: Sept. 25, 2014 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The Woodland Opera House is still a fully-operational playhouse! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: The first opera house to serve the Sacramento Valley was built on this site in 1885. The present structure, built in 1895-96, continues to represent an important center for theatrical arts of that period. Erected by David M. Hershey and incorporating the classic American playhouse interior, it served vast agricultural regions of the Sacramento Valley. Motion picture competition hastened its closing in 1913.
OTHER TIDBITS: By the time the Opera House closed, it had presented 300 touring companies, including famed Polish actress, Helen Modjeska, composer John Philip Sousa, and comics Weber and Fields! The Opera House closed over an injury lawsuit and remained so for 58 years until the Yolo County Historical Society bought and restored it! Now it has both shows and workshops that folks can still enjoy today! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
