What is it? | The Chautauqua Hall Dance Club in Pacific Grove! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: The first Chautauqua in the West was organized at Pacific Grove in June 1879 for the presentation of “moral attractions” and “the highest grade of concerts and entertainments.” Known worldwide as “Chautauqua-by-the-Sea,” it made Pacific Grove an unequaled cultural center.
OTHER TIDBITS: Chautauqua Methodist gatherings and adult education assemblies swept across the country in the late 19th and early 20th centuries! Named for Lake Chautauqua in New York, these gatherings brought in speakers and musicians from across the country to provide cultural stimulation to those in need! They lasted all the way until the 1920s when the automobile and radio made such entertainment easily accessible from individual homes! |
