What is it? | The Custom House museum in Monterey State Historic Park! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Commodore John Drake Sloat raised the American flag over this building on July 7, 1846 to signal the passing of California from Mexican to American rule. Restored through the efforts of the Native Sons of the Golden West with the assistance of the people of California.
OTHER TIDBITS: This is California’s oldest government building, built in 1827 when Mexico declared independence from Spain and started to allow international trade at its ports! Custom fees quickly became California’s most important source of revenue! It was expanded to its current size and shape by Thomas O. Larkin and became an American custom house after the Mexican-American War. It’s now a museum! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
