Landmark #135 | Monterey County | Visited: January 17, 2015 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | The refurbished 2nd mission (of 21) founded by Father Junípero Serra! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Mission San Carlos was established by Father Serra on June 3, 1770 at the Presidio of Monterey. Finding this location unsuitable, Serra moved the mission to Carmel Valley. In July 1771 he set to work constructing temporary buildings at the new site, and in December 1771 the mission was moved to its permanent location.
OTHER TIDBITS: For many years, Carmel was the headquarters of the mission chain! It was named for San Carlos Borroméo, patron saint of learning and the arts, nephew to Pope Pius IV, bishop of Trent, and one of the most important figures in the Catholic Reformation! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
