Landmark #105 | Monterey County | Visited: January 17, 2015 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | This chapel is still standing and still in service! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Established as a mission by Father Serra, June 3, 1770, this became the royal Presidio Chapel when the mission was moved to Carmel. The chapel was rebuilt with stone in 1791 and became the parish church in 1835, due to secularization. In a dilapidated condition in 1850, it was reconstructed and altered with money donated by Governor Pacheco in 1858.
OTHER TIDBITS: Monterey was the capital of Spanish operations in Alta California, and this was where much of the Spanish government was housed! Since the Spanish governors representing King Carlos III attended this church, it was known as the “Royal” Presidio chapel! In 1967, it became a cathedral, the smallest in the United States! San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo was the patron saint of learning and the arts, nephew to Pope Pius IV, bishop of Trent, and one of the most important figures in the Catholic Reformation! This landmark is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places! |
