Landmark #351 | Monterey County | Visited: January 17, 2015 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | A refurbished adobe home, once owned by the Vásquez family! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This adobe house was occupied by a sister of Tiburcio Vásquez, the colorful Monterey bandit of the 1870s.
OTHER TIDBITS: Ugh! The guide does this place an injustice! The home was bought in the 1830s by Guadalupe Cantúa de Vásquez, mother of Tiburcio, a complex criminal famous for stealing money, horses, and the hearts of women! Guadalupe was the daughter of a soldier, wed at 16 to Hermenegildo Vásquez, also a soldier, at the Royal Presidio Chapel. She was already six months pregnant when they were married! Before Tiburcio was born, the Vásquez family lost their first child, Fernando, but they went on to have 9 more (Tiburcio was the second youngest)! Doña Guadalupe received a small inheritance and purchased this home while she was pregnant with Tiburcio. Here, Tiburcio was born, and here Doña Guadalupe raised her many children and two of her illegitimately born grandchildren! What a woman! |
