Fort Miller!

Fort Miller
Landmark #584 Fresno County Visited: February 21, 2015 Plaque?  NO. 🙁
What is it? Millerton Lake, the historic courthouse, and a small plaque about Millerton!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: Now inundated by Millerton Lake, Fort Miller was established in 1852 as a temporary headquarters for the Commissioners during the latter part of the Mariposa Indian War. The peace treaty was signed there April 29, 1851. The first recorded religious services in the Fresno area were performed here on October 21, 1855 by Right Reverend William Ingraham Kip, first Protestant Episcopal Bishop of California. The village of Rootville grew into the town of Millerton and became the first seat of Fresno County in 1856.

OTHER TIDBITS: That pretty well sums it up!

How can I Help the Helpers? HERE’S HOW:

  • Pay the entrance fee to help maintain trails, signs, structures, and other visitor services!
  • Volunteer with the California State Department of Parks and Recreation!
  • Become a member of E Clampus Vitus, Jim Savage Chapter!
  • Be a responsible visitor! Please respect the signs and pathways, and treat all structures and artifacts with respect. They’ve endured a lot to survive into the present. They’ll need our help to make it into the future!
