New Helvetia Cemetery!

New Helvetia Cemetery
Landmark #592 Sacramento County Visited: March 21, 2015 Plaque?  YES! 🙂
What is it? A plaque just outside of Sutter Middle Schooll where there was once a cemetery. Spooky!
What makes it historical? THE GUIDE SAYS: This was the site of Sacramento’s first cemetery, established by Captain John A. Sutter in 1849.

OTHER TIDBITS: What happens when cemeteries get repurposed? Well, in the case of New Helvetia Cemetery, which was in use until 1912, the bodies had to be dug up and moved! Notices were sent to any family members who had bodies to claim, but the majority of the 5,000 residents wound up in a mass grave in East Lawn Memorial Cemetery! Most of the tombstones were also transferred, but some were lost and others wound up in the gardens and driveways of private homes! I guess it goes to show that final resting places can be about as final as final fantasies!
