What is it? | Nuttin’ at all! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: In 1849, the Rev. Joseph A. Benton organized the first church in Sacramento.
OTHER TIDBITS: Well that doesn’t say much about anything, does it? Reverend Benton traveled from Boston in 1849 aboard the Edward Everett, preaching for the whole six-month voyage to his fellow passengers from the Boston and California Joint Stock Mining and Trading Company! He reached Sacramento on July 14th and set up camp in this “city of tents and trees” to preach! To a congregation of about 100 folks, he delivered his first Sacramento sermons from the back of his wagon! |
