What is it? | California’s State Indian Museum! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: The State Indian Museum was built fifty years ago as California’s first state-run museum devoted to Indian cultures. It continues to serve the same purpose today, displaying an updated (1984) major exhibit on California’s Indian peoples.
OTHER TIDBITS: No photos allowed inside, but I will say that this humble museum houses an extraordinary collection of artifacts sampling California’s 100+ Native American tribes! Highlights include exquisite bowls interwoven with iridescent bird feathers, spectacular dance regalia, and glistening shell money belts. You can learn how to pound acorns into meal and boil away the bitterness! You can learn about Ishi, the last Yahi Yana tribesman to be forced out of the wilderness and into civilization! You can learn about the elders who are still fighting to keep their cultures alive and those who have had to turn essential and even sacred crafts into tourist souvenirs! |
