Landmark #593 | Sacramento County | Visited: March 21, 2015 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque commemorating Sutterville’s last building! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Sutter laid out a townsite here in 1844, about two miles below the embarcadero. In 1847, George Zins built one of the first brick structures erected in California here.
OTHER TIDBITS: John Sutter built this town at one of the few areas high enough to escape the floodwaters of the American River, so for four years, it rivaled the success of Sutter’s Fort! Then the Gold Rush hit, and all attention turned toward the Fort, leading to Sutterville’s gradual decline! |
