Landmark #603 | Sacramento County | Visited: March 22, 2015 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The Lady Adams building still stands and sells souvenirs! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This store and office building was erected in 1852 from materials brought around the Horn in the ship Lady Adams.
OTHER TIDBITS: This leaves a lot to be desired! This was one of four buildings to survive the great fire of 1852, and the only one to be completely undamaged! This was because it was heavily composed of bricks, which had been used as ballast on the Lady Adams ship! It was designed by Julius Fiedler and operated as a wholesale and banking business by German immigrants for about a hundred years until Old Sacramento fell on hard times. It was a brothel and flophouse until the 70s when the town was restored, and the Lady Adams building turned into a joke shop! |
