OTHER TIDBITS: What rot! This description skips over the heart and soul of the Sacramento Bee! Named because the newspaper was as busy as a bee, the Bee exposed its first scandal that resulted in the impeachment of the state treasurer within four days of its inception! In 150 years, it has been a champion for environmental protection and public ownership of utilities, not to mention a forum for discussing social and political issues! In 1939, the paper won the Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for Public Service after exposing political manipulation of the federal judiciary, making it the first California-based publication to win the prize! Its mascots, Scoopy and Gaby the bees, were designed by Walt Disney in 1943 on condition that the paper donate $1,500 to the Army Relief Fund! |
