What is it? | Nothing but a parking lot! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Constructed by William Land in 1875, this hotel was one of the largest in the West. It was built on sites of earlier hotels of 1853-1854.
OTHER TIDBITS: What kind of description is this for a man whose father sold him into indentured servitude as a child, who bought his way out and through college, and who came to California with three dollars in his pocket! He got a job at the 17-year old Western hotel and worked his way up to owner. Mr. Land basically embodied the American ideal of success! When the hotel burnt down in 1875, Mr. Land wasted no time in rebuilding and purchasing the adjacent lot so the hotel would lose no eastern sunlight! He was mayor from 1898 to 1899 and loaned the city $80,000 to reduce taxes and retiring city bonds. When he died, he left the city of Sacramento $250,000 to build William Land Park and $200,000 to help the poor of the city! |
