What is it? | A plaque on the site of Jared Dixon Sheldon’s Grist Mill! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Jared Dixon (Joaquin) Sheldon built his grist mill on Omochumnes Rancho, granted to him by the Mexican government in 1823. Born in Vermont on January 8, 1813, Sheldon came to California in 1832. He was shot July 11,1851 in a quarrel over a dam he had built that flooded miners’ claims.
OTHER TIDBITS: This was another mill that supplied John Sutter, only this one processed wheat! It was operated by Jared Sheldon and his friend, William Daylor, who made friends with the local Miwok and were able to conduct business peacefully, all the way until Mr. Sheldon decided to build a dam and irrigate crops to feed to miners. Unfortunately, the dam flooded their claims, and when he refused to dismantle the dam, a shootout ensued. It didn’t end well for Mr. Dixon, but his popular Sloughhouse Inn still remains to this day! |
