Landmark #663 | Calaveras County | Visited: May 8, 2015 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | The Hotel Leger is still serving guests to this day! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: A portion of this building served as the Calaveras County Courthouse from 1852 to 1866, when the county seat was removed to San Andreas. George W. Leger then acquired the court building and made it a part of his adjoining hotel, which has been in operation since early gold mining days – it was known as the Grand Hotel in 1874 when fire damaged it and destroyed its dance hall. Restored in 1879, it has since been known as the Leger Hotel.
OTHER TIDBITS: At a jail near this site in 1850, Joe Zumwalt launched California’s first chapter of the Ancient and Honorable Order of E Clampus Vitus! He had first seen the rituals of this mysterious order in Missouri, failed to set up a lodge in Placerville, then succeeded beautifully in Mokelumne Hill! For those of you who don’t know, E Clampus Vitus is a humorous band of drinking historians, or historical drinkers, who ponder amidst their carousing and hold historical erections across their chapter’s region. A lot of the historical landmarks on my journey were sponsored by the Order, to which I say, “Satisfactory!” |
