Landmark #264 | Calaveras County | Visited: May 8, 2015 | Plaque? YES! 🙂 |
What is it? | A plaque right next to a red barn! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Founded February 18, 1850, Double Springs was once the seat of Calaveras County. The old courthouse, said to be constructed of lumber brought from China, is still standing, but not on its original site.
OTHER TIDBITS: Picking a county seat for Calaveras County was one chaotic process! Even though the first canvas tent courthouse popped up in Double Springs, the seat moved first to Jackson in 1851, then to Mokelumne Hill in 1852, then finally to San Andreas in 1866! Think of it as the miniature version of the Capitol on Wheels period! |
