What is it? | The I.O.O.F. building still stands, but it’s not in use! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: This is said to be California’s first three-story building to be erected outside the coastal towns. The original building was erected in 1854 as a two-story building – a third story to be used for lodge purposes was added later.
OTHER TIDBITS: This building was originally owned by Adams Express Company and changed hands twice until 1860 when the Independent Order of Odd Fellows bought it and added the third story for their meetings! Who are the Odd Fellows? They are an order of men and women who originated in 18th-century England and promote friendship, love, and truth everywhere they go! |
