Landmark #118 | Amador County | Visited: May 8, 2015 | Plaque? NO. 🙁 |
What is it? | Nothing left but a motel and street that bear the name of this landmark! |
What makes it historical? | THE GUIDE SAYS: Jackson Gate, on the north fork of Jackson Creek, takes its name from a fissure in a reef of rock that crosses the creek. In 1850 about 500 miners worked here and the first mining ditch in the county was dug here – its water sold for $1 per inch.
OTHER TIDBITS: The Chichizola family, like many miners who didn’t strike it rich, made their fortune in other enterprises. Their store at Jackson Gate became the largest and most important in the county because it was so centrally located to prosperous mines with hungry miners! |
